SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP TO CONSERVE OUR WILDLIFE IN MARLOTH PARK

If we don’t conserve the soil we have no vegetation. Without vegetation we have no animal life.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SWEEP OUR PROPERTIES BARE AND CLEAN?

  • We encourage snakes and scorpions and other less desirable visitors to seek shelter in our houses or verandas as there is no other cover nearby outside.
  • Pioneer plants (often weeds) take overto try to bind the soil and protect it from wind, sun, rain.
  • We lose the fallen leaveswhich help to keep moisture and nutrients in the soil and prevent over-heating of the ground. They also prevent weeds from taking hold.
  • We encourage soil erosion.

TO CONSERVE YOUR OWN PROPERTY

  • Do not sweep your property. At most, cut short 2m grass around your house. Leave fallen leaves to protect the ground.
  • Leave rocks scattered in the veld as cover for small animals.  There they will help keep snakes, scorpions and mice away from your home.
  • Do not plant exotic plants of any kind. Plant locally indigenous species. They will need little water after they are established, are resistant to insect infestations and you SAVE WATER.
  • Help the veld recover by planting locally indigenous grass seeds.
  • Do not slash black jacks.  Slashing will remove the seeding heads of grass and indigenous forbs.
  • Stabilize soil erosion by filling with brush, gravel and plant grass.
  • Do not form exclusion areas where game cannot graze. THE SMALLER WE MAKE THE ANIMALS’ GRAZING RANGE, THE LESS ANIMALS MARLOTH PARK CAN CARRY (and the more that need to be culled!)

Our vision
