We call on all home owners of Marloth Park to help control soil erosion on their properties and surrounding areas.

Reduce the velocity of rain run-off. Material is lost down steeply graded roads. This material can easily be reduced by the construction of water diversion berms across the road, thereby diverting the water onto the surrounding veld.

Diversion ditches.  Dig a small ditch close to the upper edge of the property to slow down water movement.

Build small retaining walls or terraces where there are steep slopes.Eroding slopes that are steep rarely support vegetation. The steeper the slope, the more attention one has to pay to prevent scouring. Build a retaining wall with rocks, sand bags or gravel type material, toslow the water down

Do not sweep your property. We cannot emphasise this point enough! Sweeping encourages and aggravates soil erosion. Valuable topsoil is lost.

Plant grass and shrubs.Plant roots hold the soil together, while their leaves lessen damage caused by rain.  Minimize the areas of bare soil.

Plant indigenous trees on steep slopes and riverbanks to prevent landslides and soil loss.Tree roots are powerful aids where soil is too eroded or steep to plant shrubs.

Add mulch or rocks.Use these to cover any remaining patches of bare soil. Mulch, such as grass or leaves, is especially effective. This will also protect grass seeds and young plants from animals and water run-off, giving them time to grow.

Bou klein keerwalle of terrasse waar daar steiltes voorkom.

Waardevolle bogrond kan so behoue bly.

Werk kompos of klippe in.
