Environmental Management Report

Environmental Management Report

With the high animal numbers and evident impact on the ecology within Marloth Park, it was agreed early in 2015that an updated ecological study of Marloth Park should be commissioned. The Marloth Park Property Owners Association appointed Rhengu Environmental Services (RES) to conduct this survey, the cost of which was financed with donations from property owners and Forum members. The survey was commissioned to determine the prevailing veld condition of the property and to identify the ecological problems facing the management of this very special system.

The approach to this survey and document is based on the comprehensive Ecological Report submitted by Ben Orban in 2006. What was now required was to update the Orban Report and encapsulate the important aspects of its contents into a functional, practical, hands on version of events describing the prevailing wildlife conditions. This report should then provide for a more dynamic, down to earth instruction manual on wildlife management issues, problems and solutions. The results of the study were used to compile an Environmental Management Report (EMR).

The primary responsibility for the implementation of the management recommendations remains with the Municipal Conservation Department and appointed conservation manager. However there is a great deal of information which can assist property owners in managing their own stands and we appeal to property owners to view this report on the Honorary Rangers web site at:

Handleidingviromgewingsbestuur

(in Engels bekend as ’n Environmental Management Report (EMR))

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP TO CONSERVE OUR WILDLIFE IN MARLOTH PARK

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP TO CONSERVE OUR WILDLIFE IN MARLOTH PARK

If we don’t conserve the soil we have no vegetation. Without vegetation we have no animal life.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SWEEP OUR PROPERTIES BARE AND CLEAN?

  • We encourage snakes and scorpions and other less desirable visitors to seek shelter in our houses or verandas as there is no other cover nearby outside.
  • Pioneer plants (often weeds) take overto try to bind the soil and protect it from wind, sun, rain.
  • We lose the fallen leaveswhich help to keep moisture and nutrients in the soil and prevent over-heating of the ground. They also prevent weeds from taking hold.
  • We encourage soil erosion.

THE CARE OF PROTECTED AND OTHER TREES

Trees and all other vegetation are precious resources in Marloth Park and we must do all we can to preserve them.  Generally speaking it is against the law to remove any tree from a property without obtaining formal permission from the Conservation Authority.

Protected trees: certain trees are protected under the National Forest Act, 1998 and may not be cut, damaged, destroyed or removed except under an exemption granted by the Minister. In Marloth Park these trees include:

SAVE OUR OWLS AND OTHER ANIMALS!

It is a well-documented fact world-wide that poisons, meant to control vermin, are killing non-targeted animals like owls, wild animals and also domestic pets.  Here in Marloth Park it is no exception.
