WE NEED YOUR HELP: February 2015

THE HONORARY RANGERS NEED YOUR HELP!

The Marloth Park Honorary Rangers are a group of volunteer property owners who offer their time, expertise and resources while working to a code of conduct for the benefit of conservation and the environment in Marloth Park and Lionspruit.  We plan and carry out all projects and activities, as and when needed.

We fall under the auspices of the municipal conservation department and all applications, to become Honorary Rangers, are signed by the Municipal Manager. We are also proud to provide support to the Marloth Park Municipal Rangers.

We encourage property owners who would like to make a contribution in Marloth Park, to join the Honorary Rangers team.  A variety of skills are needed such as managerial, technical, administrative, financial, computer and fund-raising.  Knowledge of fauna and flora and the environment would be very useful.

Property numbers and name boards: September 2014

It has always been a feature of Marloth Park where property owners who have a need, display a sign with their stand number and a name. These have traditionally been bush friendly signs complying with the requirements as laid out in the town planning scheme of 2000 or building recommendations. Specifications are 600x800 and where possible made of wood.

HELP CONSERVE OUR WILDLIFE: December 2014

SIMPLE WAYS TO HELP TO CONSERVE OUR WILDLIFE IN MARLOTH PARK

If we don’t conserve the soil we have no vegetation. Without vegetation we have no animal life.

WHAT HAPPENS WHEN WE SWEEP OUR PROPERTIES BARE AND CLEAN?

  • We encourage snakes and scorpions and other less desirable visitors to seek shelter in our houses or verandas as there is no other cover nearby outside.
  • Pioneer plants (often weeds) take over to try to bind the soil and protect it from wind, sun, rain.
  • We lose the fallen leaves which help to keep moisture and nutrients in the soil and prevent over-heating of the ground. They also prevent weeds from taking hold.
  • We encourage soil erosion.

Did you know that grass cools the area where you live?   On a hot summer day, grass can be 10-14 degrees cooler than bare soil and up to 30 degrees cooler than concrete or stone chips on your drive-way or around your house.

Reptile Removal: October 2014

The Marloth Park Honorary Rangers have a team of two people who assist property owners with the removal of snakes from their homes. This initiative was started some years ago due to the potentially dangerous nature of some of the snakes in Marloth Park and also to eliminate the need to kill these reptiles.

Our vision

hrOur vision is to support and assist the Nkomazi Municipality Conservation Department within Marloth Park with their management strategies and objectives while being an effective volunteer group.
